Those acquainted with Bill Mashaw knew a determined man who twisted arms to get people to hand over their money. If that sounds like a recipe for evil, well, in Mashaw's case, it was the opposite. The longtime Durango-an, who died in June 2009 at age 87, was one of the good guys. His goal was to help low-income families, and whatever cajoling that took, he would do it. But he never was mean. "He had a way of twisting your arm that was effective but gentle," said Steve Short, president of First National Bank of Durango and chairman of the newly formed Bill Mashaw Affordable Housing Fund. Mashaw and his wife, Dorothy, moved to Washington state in 2006 after 22 years in Durango. He'd be pleased to know the work he started for affordable housing - one of his many causes - isn't being abandoned. "I've never known anybody who devoted his same type of positive energy and spirit ... to making the com munity that he lived in better," Short said. The hope is that Bill Mashaw can lend his diplomatic skills to affordable housing, even after his death. "Before people forget how important Bill was to this community, we should take advantage of it, and take advantage in a good way," said Sidny Zink, a local accountant who serves as treasurer for the Mashaw fund.
